This manual illustrates the applicability of static penetrometer tests in reconstructing the stratigraphic profile and in the design of shallow and deep foundations.
Among the numerous tools usable in situ, the static penetrometer with mechanical and electrical cone (CPTm, CPTe) and the piezocone (CPTu and SCPTu) represent the most versatile instruments for soil exploration. The CPTm, CPTe, CPTu, and SCPTu tests have proven more effective than traditional field investigation methods, such as drilling and sampling, because they are fast, repeatable, and economical.
The Geotechnical Manual analyzes current methodologies for performing and interpreting static penetrometer tests conducted with a conical tip. In particular, it covers the static penetrometer equipment (chapter 2), test procedures (chapter 3), application (chapter 4), and interpretation (chapter 5) of CPT and CPTu tests (soil stratigraphy and evaluation of related parameters), as well as the direct use of the CPT test in the design of shallow and deep foundations.
The information presented derives from an in-depth analysis of international literature, based on consolidated experiences (texts by Lunne et al., 1997, Mayne, 2007, and other international publications). Regarding the most innovative aspects, reference is made to research activities conducted by the Universities of Pisa and Pavia.
